FTSE CLOSE: Stocks rally as fears of U.S recession recede This is Money

Banking shares were among the biggest risers after Royal Bank of Scotland was upgraded by Deutsche Bank, which said the group represented good value following its recent share price falls. Shares in the taxpayer-backed bank were up 8 per cent, or 1.8p to 23.6p.

The CBI and the British Bankers' Association called for a delay to reforms expected in the forthcoming report by the Independent Commission on Banking (ICB) which also whetted investors' appetite for banking stocks.

Barclays was up 10.4p to 165.4p, while Lloyds Banking Group added 2.3p to 32p and HSBC advanced 21.1p to 524.9p.

Elsewhere in the financial sector, insurance shares were higher, with Aviva 18.1p stronger at 329.7p and Prudential up 25p at 598p.

Reckitt Benckiser sank to the bottom of the FTSE 100 after a Markit report revealed a decline in European retail sales, which is the pharmaceutical giants core market. Shares fell 9p at 3198p.

Other stocks on the front foot included ITV, which surged 3 per cent or 1.9p to 59.8p after the Daily Telegraph reported that the broadcaster was considering a move to work with Italy's Mediaset on a deal to buy production giant Endemol.
