Movie review: 'The Debt' excels as an espionage thriller The Patriot Ledger

Over the years, which emotion will grind your conscience into a finer dust guilt or shame? What if you were haunted by both?

You could go insane, you could avoid the rubber room by practicing denial or you could simply accept the "facts" and move on with your life. Long-term mental anguish and fear of the truth eventually emerging can provide a devastating one-two punch to the psyche.

Three agents of Mossad, the Israeli Secret Service, get to face this destructive combo in " The Debt ," a spy thriller that actually delivers thrills. It also features several knockout performances with Helen Mirren topping the card. OK, no more boxing references.

Adapted from the 2007 Israeli film "Ha-Hov" ("The Debt"), the movie opens in 1997 in Tel Aviv where the daughter of Mossad agent Rachel Singer (Mirren) is launching a book she has written about her mother's heroic exploits. Mirren then reads from the book and the film flashes back to 1965 in East Berlin where the young Singer (Jessica Chastain) is standing guard over Dieter Vogel (Jesper Christensen), the infamous Surgeon of Birkenau. This Nazi butcher escaped capture after World War II and is now a gynecologist with a new identity. Mossad's mission is to capture Vogel and bring him back to Israel to face justice.
