I Can't Tell If My Debt Consolidation Company Is Legit - What Should I Do?

I'm in a little bit of financial trouble and have decided to consolidate my bills. After a few calls to a few of the different companies that offer debt consolidation, 800CreditCardDebt.com seems to be the the most legit. I have yet to sign anything, because since this is such a serious matter, I wanted to do a bit of research on the company.

Turns out my payment is supposed to go to a PO Box in Long Island, but the Law Firm that will be representing me is actually located outside of Ft Lauderdale, FL. Now, first, the PO Box kind of sounded fishy to me, but then the fact that they don't mention the fact that they're actually in Florida.. I had to do a search on Google to find that out. And, I did a search on the New York and Florida Better Business Bureau websites, and they're not registered.

My simple question is, are most debt consolidation places like this? I just don't want to get involved in a company that could possibly be a scam.

Thanks!
Also, I don't need a speech on not consolidating or whatever.. I'd like to do this, I just need to know if the company I'm going through is really reputable.

I don't know about the company that you are talking about, but I have known people who used a company called "Novadebt", and they are legit. And I was told they are also very nice to deal with, not making you feel bad for having problems.

They are fine.

I am in the same boat. If you go to the Better Business Bureau website which is bbb.com you can check them out there to see if they have been any complaints filed against them. Also if you look under the city or state you are in there are some companies that are nonprofit that will help you for free. I am researching this myself. If I am already having fianancial problems why do I want to pay someone money already can't afford to pay to help me? That, I don't understand. Usually if a company isn't registered with the Better Business Bureau they are new or they haven't had anyone file a complaint against them. Good luck. I hope you get your troubles resolved.

Why don't you contact Consumer Credit Counseling Services?

They are a free service that works with your creditors and lowers your monthly payments as well as your interest rates. I used them several years ago and was completely out of debt in 36-months.

Never pay for a service if you can get it for free.

It is very stressfull and time consuming but if you can do it yourself its the best way. All these companies do is negotiate a settlement with each of the creditors for pennies on the dollar, and they charge you a fee to do that. If you just contact them and show good will to pay your debts you can settle them for less. You will still have due dates for the multiple payments . Just put them at a comfortable time of month.

Has anyone used Federated Financial Counseling Services, Corp (out of Florida) to help with Debt Consolidation

Has anyone used Federated Financial Counseling Services, Corp (out of Florida) to help with Debt Consolidation? They are based in Deerfield Beach-Florida. Are they a good company to work with? Are the reputable & trust-worthy?

I've tried dealing with my creditors, but they can't help me.

I am researching them right now and would love to hear from someone who has used them in the past successfully. I've read some bad things and some good things. They are rated with the BBB but that was some years back.

Please anyone with any comments regarding Federated Financial, pass them on!

Thanks so much!

Be very careful about working with non-profit debt consolidation services such as the one mentioned above. If you do some research you will find that these types of companies are paid for and sponsored by the creditors themselves and they do not have your best interest at hand.

Check with the BBB also and see if they have any complaints. If you are looking to get out of debt you will want to look into settling debts and being debt free in 12-30 months or less. Debt settlement can also give you one lower monthly payment.

What is the Statutes of Limitations in Florida for credit card debt?

I have a debt that's over ten years old and a collection company threatening to sue. I think they're fishing. The last payment was made around the year 2000 through a credit consolidation company. Nothing since. I didn't agree to pay them anything, I didn't say that I owe the amount they claim but I also didn't deny it.
Is this something I should worry about?

In Florida the limit is 4 years. If it's been 8 years since you made a payment, and you've lived in Florida the entire time, you can tell them to pack sand. If they make any threats at all tell 'em you're going to file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.

If you lived in Florida, then left the state, then came back, the time you lived outside the state does not count toward the 4 years. So the time stops, then starts again when you come back.

no most credit depts expire after seven years they are fishing ignore it

Going to hell for being a cheat.
You created the debt so be a man and pay it off!
You got a problem with paying for your purchases?

i don't know about Florida but i live in Texas and we had a pharmacy that has been closed for 20 years and 1 company still bothers us every 2 years, have to go to a attorney for a debasition to see if we have anything they can take from us, it's crazy and i am so sick of them, plus they continue adding interest on top of that to the point we will never be able to pay them back. normally it's 7 years for your credit report.

Debt consolidation fraud, what can one do?

My friend has been paying a company in Florida who said they were a law firm over the past 2 years to pay off her credit card debt. She made her last payment this month and has paid them $13000 total. Now she finds out they havent paid any of her bills and aren't even real lawyers.
What does she do now? Is there a way to get the money back? They have ruined her credit more than it was already ruined. Is there a reporting agency?

Report this to the Federal Trade Commission. She should also contact the Prosecuting attorney in the jurisdiction in which she lives.

Now she needs a REAL lawyer.

yes she can, first she has to have Bills, and copies of checks and statements were it proves she has been paying to them,
next she needs to file a civil claim, where she states that she has been a victim of fraud, then she has to provide phone numbers or anything she has whit their name, addresses etc. and take from there!! GOOD LUCK!!

The first thing I would do is to hire a real attorney. This person would be able to offer advice and insight as to what her best course of action would be. Then I would contact the postmaster and have them investigated for mail fraud (assuming she is paying through the mail) as well as filing a complaint with the Florida attorney general and bar association. If these people are truly representing themselves as lawyers, they will be investigated.

Why not just pay that to the credit card company in the first place?

I don't understand people sometimes.
