Summer in Tel Aviv is an unsentimental son of a bitch.
The humidity does different things to different people, but I don't know anyone who emits a better odor because of it. Crowding into a small, clammy space bustling with people - some of them quite loud, a few frequently clearing their throats into megaphones and others overflowing with love of humanity - is more or less the description I would offer if I were asked for a portrait of hell. Nevertheless, my new address is Rothschild Boulevard and Nachmani Street, next to the plaster building with the red tile roof. It's actually only a sublease - the tent belongs to a close friend whose seven-year-old son possesses a potent sense of property, so we sneak into it when he's at day camp or sleeping. And even though the effort demands a sense of determination, we try to visit it as much as possible. Like all our neighbors in the tent camp, we know that what's at stake is so vast and so fateful that if we dare loosen our grip even for a minute, if something else inadvertently catches our attention, the momentum that has been generated out of nowhere amid an apathetic, petty-minded, sad routine is liable to evaporate and become merely an anecdote.
