While it may feel like all debt collectors are out to rip you off, some really are.
Federal authorities say they recently broke up two nasty rings of callers that were posing as debt collectors and trying to shake down people for debts they didn't owe, or owed to someone else.
Authorities say the scams had one thing in common - the people who were targeted had applied online for payday loans, and their loan application data apparently had made its way into the hands of scammers.
Those scammers were accused of making threatening phone calls and trying to get people to pay up. Many did, either out of fear or because they felt the debts were legit, as the callers had their information from their loan applications.
If you get a call from a debt collector, don't fall for their scare tactics and don't pay over the phone. Find out what the debt is for. Legitimate debt collectors should send you what's called a "validation notice" that explains whom you owe the money to and what your rights are.
