Who Benefits from the Greek Bailout? The Market Oracle
The French and German banks account for roughly half of all European banks’ exposure to those euro-zone countries, meaning that the combined exposure of European banks to those four nations is over $1.8 trillion, nearly half of which is with Spain alone. Thus, in the eyes of the elites and the institutions which serve them (such as the EU and IMF), a bailout is necessary because if Greece were to default on its debt, “investors may question whether French and German banks could withstand the potential losses, sparking a panic that could reverberate throughout the financial system.”[61]
In late February of 2010, Greece replaced the head of the Greek debt management agency with Petros Christodoulou. His job was “to procure favorable loans in the financial markets so that Athens can at least pay off its old debts with new debt.” His career went along an interesting path, to say the least, as he studied finance in Athens and Columbia University in New York, and went on to hold senior executive positions at several financial institutions, such as Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and just prior to heading the Public Debt Management Agency (PDMA), he was treasurer at the National Bank of Greece.[62] Before his 12-year stint at the National Bank of Greece, the largest commercial bank in Greece, he headed the derivatives desk at JP Morgan.[63]
UK debt collection agencies and how to handle them

Whats the longest time a UK Debt Collection Agency can legally chase you for a debt before they have to stop?
Debt collection agencies in the Uk have only 6 years from the default date to chase it, after that it is illegal is this true?
Dear sir/madam
With reference to the above account, I am writing to confirm I am not acknowledging this debt.would you please send me a true copy of this credit agreement. I understand that under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 (Sections 77−79), I am entitled to receive a copy of my credit agreement on request and this should be supplied within 12 working days. I enclose a payment of £1.00 which represents the fee payable under the Consumer Credit Act.
Non-compliance with my request is a criminal offence under the above Act and will result in a report being submitted to the relevant statutory authorities.
As you are aware, a credit agreement that is not properly documented and signed by the customer is totally unenforceable under the CCA and therefore is a complete defence to any court claim that is issued.
Please note that under Section 189 you are obliged to supply these documents whether you are the original creditor or not. I await your reply
This is an area that causes a lot of confusion.
Basically in the UK there is no limit to the amount of time you can be chased for a debt. They can chase you until the debt is paid, no matter how long it takes.
However, and this is where the confusion comes in, after 6 years the debt is wiped from your credit file. This doesn't mean the debt no longer exists, just thats its not shown on your file any more.
Also, there is a rule called the "statuate of limitations" which states if there is no contact between the debtor and lender for a period of 6 years, then the debt becomes statuate barred. No contact means, that you have not made a payment, or acknowledged the debt at all for a continuous period of 6 years.
Once a debt is statuate barred, it means the lender can no longer take you to court to get you to pay. Whilst they can still chase the debt, because they can't take you to court, if you still don't pay theres nothing really they can do about it.
So they can chase you forever, however after the debt becomes statuate barred they usually give up.
Make sure with your letter above that you DO NOT sign it, as this helps to preserve the statuate barred status.
What you letter is saying is that if they cannot give you a copy of the signed copy of your credit agreement your debt becomes unenforceable. A lot of companies didn't keep proper records after more than a couple of years, so if they don't have the original copy they may give up chasing you. However, if they do give you a signed copy of the agreement, you would still be liable for the debt.
How do you start a debt collection agency in the UK?
Where can i buy debt? Do i need a licence? Ill be grateful for some help!!!!!
You first need to start training a large Rottweiler .. (this will help you "communicate" with the other Debt Collectors in your area who will be very happy to have a nice "chat" with the new competition)
can i still move to Florida if I'm paying a debt collection agency in the UK?
If you contact them, and let them know your new address, it should be fine. As long as you stay in contact and don't try to hide anything, they should be fine with it.
Can a UK debt recovery agency issue a court order against me in another country ie Australia?
After a long drawn out issue over a credit card debt I have while I was living in the UK, the bank has now passed it on to a debt recovery agency (I'm an Australian citizen). I've just received a letter from the agency explaining that if I dont pay the full outstanding amount (which is well under $10,000) it may result in legal proceedings being issued in the country of which I reside, which is Australia. Can a UK debt collections company actually do this...I mean summon me to court in Australia even though the debt was with a UK bank?
Please spare me any preaching about having to pay for my own debt etc, I have tried to on more than a few occasions to make payment arrangements with the bank, however due to their inconpetence they either gave me the wrong bank account details so I could use telegraphic transfer, or they lost a large payment amount I made to them (eventually they found it). I gave up trusting their advice on the bank details I needed to give my Australian bank to transfer the money after numerous phone calls from Australia to the UK and misinformation from their customer service, so I decided not to pay them.
Hi
I don't belive they can - even so the worst they can do is list you. It will only last 5 yrs - if you can hang on I would try and dodge it. F*k em! They make a lot of money - don't worry about it and just hide. The only way they can find you is via white pages and electorial roll. Just stay off those and you should not hear from them.
I have done something similar recently - the phone calls lasted about 3 months - then all of a sudden - STOP.... I will strike problems if I apply for credit - so I don't do that :)
Good luck - and from now on - just pay cash.... It's what we should have done in the first place - right?
Banks are multinational, it happens all the time.
It would be pointless in your situation but if the UK debts were huge you could fly back here and declare yourself bankrupt at the High Court, go back to Australia and forget about it.
What can a UK collection agency legally do to me in Canada?
Background: My wife and I moved back to Canada after living in the UK for three years in Sept '05. We still had some debt owing on our HSBC credit cards, but left a balance in our accounts to cover minimum payments until we were able to secure a loan to pay them off. Well, my wife's account ran out of money before we could get a loan, and without any notification HSBC shut the credit card account and turned it over to a collection agency, named Wescot Credit Services.
I have called and spoken with them, only to be bullied and threatened with legal action if we didn't repay the entire balance immediately. My question is: what legal action can they take if I'm in Canada? I've read that our Canadian credit rating won't be affected, but can they send agents beating down our door? thanks for the responses.
I know one person who left the UK owing various companies money. One of them found out she was in Florida and they sold the debt to a Florida Debt Recovery Agency and they contacted her giving her 30 days to pay the entire amount or face legal action. This may be a possibility that could happen to you

Can a debt you have with a debt collection company be referred back to the original creditor? ?
I have had credit card debt with a large UK bank, which has now been referred to a Debt Collection Agency. If I contact the bank and negotiate a payment plan, is it possible that this debt will be taken back? I would much prefer to deal with my bank that a debt collection agency that threat CCJ and sending bailiffs to my parents house (I now live outside of the UK and have done for over a year.
How Long does a UK credit card Debt Last?
I had a credit card debt 12 years ago at an old address. I moved house and never heard from the company again. Now out of the blue I have had a letter from a debt collection agency demanding that I pay up. Is there a time limit as to how long they can chase this debt? also does anyone know how/why I I suddenly get a letter. I haven't applied for any credit since and have changed address twice? Is there anything I can do to avoid paying?
Let's say you lent me a thousand pounds, and I skipped the country and didn't pay you back: how many years would it be before (if you suddenly found out where I was) you wouldn't be interested in getting your money back any more?
There are legal limits (something like seven years) on how long they can "hound" you, but they can go on politely asking you for the rest of your life. And when you die, they can file with your estate...
How long can a debt collection agency chase you for if you have not acknowledged the debt?
I have a debt from four years ago which has been sold to a debt collection agency. I recieved my first letter from them this morning. There was no mention of the debt, just a rather ambiguous letter saying that some post for me had been sent to the wrong address and that they were holding it and would I contact them to let them know if I live at this address. The letter was only addressed to the occupier of my house so I am not sure if they are certain of my address. I have not done anything with the letter yet but looking at some of the questions on this website some people seem to think that if you do not acknowledge your debt to these companies then they will only chase you for so long. Am going to go to Citizens advice re. paying my debts but just wondered where I stand out of interest. UK Answers please. Would really appreciate some good advice, I am sure there are many in my boat at the min xxx
In England a debt becomes unenforceable if the creditor doesn't act for six years and you don't acknowledge it. Since your debt is less than six years old and the creditor is attempting to contact you, they can continue to chase you indefinitely.
What can the debt collection agency do if I cancel a BT contract before it ends?
I have recently canceled a BT internet contract due to an unexpected circumstance that forced me to leave the UK (I was an overseas student in London). I never want to leave the contract behind irresponsibly, so I contacted BT and tried to explain my situation in order to negotiate for a lower cancellation fee. However, BT came back threatening me with legal actions without any willingness to discuss. They insisted that I pay a one-time payment (~£600) covering the remaining contract. Even though I am not living in London at the moment and will not have the chance to return in the near future, I still want to deal with this problem nicely without messing with my credit. I am hoping to hear any similar experiences or advice so that I can put myself in a better position to negotiate without being patronized by their attitude. I am grateful to any of your advice!
1. If this debt eventually goes to a debt collection agency, can the agency take money from my bank account in Britain to recover their debt (would they be able to get a court order)?
2. Since I simply terminated the contract before it ends and haven’t used the service (unlike credit card debts), is this sort of debt equally serious?
3. Given that I am not a British citizen and have no property in Britain; would the debt collection agency be able to trace me if I had the chance the return to complete my studies?
It is very difficult to advise without knowing all the facts. It seems prima face that BT wish to activate the agreed cancellation clause. If you wish to pay this then you will not be in breach of contract as it specifically caters for this eventuality. The best way to discharge ones contractual obligations is to fulfil them.
However, if you refuse, then you will then be in breach and they may refer you to the collection agency. Several thing can happen here but it is unlikely they will be in a position to recover any real property as you have left the country. It is very unlikelty they will try to recover from your bank account. They may have a go through your bank mandate should you not have cancelled it. It is more likely you will be placed on a bad credit list as the agency will report you have gone .
When you return to the country this may catch up with you. Any new agreement of this type will certainly ask for previous addresses. This is how they track who is who.
Your task will be to avoid this.
If you have a problem with BT or you believe you were mis-sold the contract by some form of misrepresentation then you can challenge the validity of the contract. However, if you signed with full information on the cancellation costs and are now refusing to cough up you will look like a bad debtor in both the eyes of BT and the law.
I hope this helps.
