Demands on charities grow Demand for assistance from the Salvation Army in Des Moines is up almost 20 percent in a year, and the charity is facing a budget crunch, according to a news release. Since the start of its fiscal year, the organization has served 17.5 percent more people than during the same period a year earlier.
The story is similar at Des Moines Area Religious Council food pantries: 11.4 percent more traffic.
Arvid Huisman, development director for the Salvation Army in Des Moines, said in the statement that the Salvation Army’s ability to help people is limited by the group’s resources.
