The technology sector led the advance in Toronto, with shares of Research In Motion up nearly 1 per cent, following a research report from RBC Dominion Securities suggesting the company should split in two. The BlackBerry maker hosts its annual shareholder meeting in Waterloo, Ont., this evening where management will have to answer for one of the worst annual performances in the company’s history.

Materials also gained, assisted by rising gold stocks. Barrick Gold Corp. rose 33 cents to $44.80. Bullion prices rose $4.30 (U.S.) to $1,553.50, close to an all-time high, as many investors continued to move to assets considered havens in times of uncertainty.

In New York, advancing stocks outnumbered declining stocks by 63 per cent to 37 per cent. But a lot of the technology sector was feeling pain as some quarterly results missed expectations. Microchip Technology, which makes analog chips, cited weaker demand from auto makers and computer manufacturers for a shortfall and the shares reacted by falling 13 per cent. Intel Corp. fell nearly 2 per cent and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. dropped nearly 4 per cent. Texas Instruments lost 3 per cent.
